SAMA Altoona to present two railroad photography exhibitions

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Altoona will host two photography exhibitions April 19-July 7.

“Passing Freight” is a solo exhibit featuring freight train cars in the United States by artist Stephen Mallon. Mallon’s photographs “capture the grandeur of the human capacity to achieve immensely complicated engineering feats by revealing the subtle yet intricate beauty of rail cars passing across the American landscape,” according to a news release.

“Contours: Land, Rail, Rau” takes viewers on a photographic journey across the elegant industrial sprawl of the Pennsylvania Railroad during the height of its operation featuring the photographs of William H. Rau. Rau served as the official photographer of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and captured a broad range of scenes with the fine details found along the landscape of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The exhibit is guest curated by Julie Rockwell, archivist of the East Broad Top Railroad.

An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 27.

The cost to attend is a minimum donation of $10 or more. Live music will be provided by Fair Winds II, a flute and bassoon duo from State College, which will play a varied program including classical selections, fiddle tunes, waltzes, ragtime and several railroad tunes.

“By placing these two exhibitions in dialogue with each other, we hope to stimulate a conversation about the industrial legacy that built Altoona, how that legacy unfolds today, and, perhaps, even, what it might mean for our city’s future,” stated Altoona Site Director Dante DiAndrea.

VENICE, Italy (AP) — Jeffrey Gibson’s takeover of the U.S. pavilion for this year’s Venice Biennale contemporary art show is a celebration of color, pattern and craft, which is immediately evident on approaching the bright red facade decorated by a colorful clash of geometry and a foreground dominated by a riot of gigantic red podiums.

Gibson, a Mississippi Choctaw with Cherokee descent, is the first Native American to represent the United States solo at the Venice Biennale, the world’s oldest contemporary art show. For context, the last time Native American artists were included was in 1932.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Arvind, inaugurated the photo exhibition organised by the Sobha Singh Fine Arts and Museum and Art Gallery. Addressing the gathering, he said, “In today’s times, anyone who has an interest can learn the art of photography. The continuous development of technology has also opened up many new avenues for the field of art.”

Talking about the photos at the exhibition that were clicked by Jaskaran Singh and Ranjodh Singh, Prof Arvind said such exhibitions inspire students and also help them learn art in different forms by observing the work of expert students.

Department Head, Dr Kavita Singh, said this exhibition would continue until April 30. She said technical aspects of photography would also be discussed during a separate session by Ranjodh Singh and Jaskaran Singh.

Registrar Prof Navjot Kaur praised the department’s steps for the exhibition. She said nowadays, the parameters of intellectual relations have changed, adding that respect for the arts and other relevant skills has increased.
