Tips for Photographing Local Models While Traveling

Traveling and photography are a perfect match. It’s so fun to photograph in a new place. Yet, for portrait photographers, locating models while abroad can be a challenge. There’s nothing more disheartening than finding yourself in an incredible place with no one to photograph. Here are some tips for finding models while you travel!

Barcelona is an insanely beautiful city celebrated for its stunning coastal views and exceptional architecture. It’s a unique blend of antiquity and contemporary urban charm, offering a perfect balance between city life and vacation vibes, with the beach just a stone’s throw away. So, it was very important to me that I capture some portraits while I was there.

During my trip, I was able to photograph several amazing models in this dreamy city, and it made my trip that much more amazing. Photographing local models brought a level of creativity, authenticity, and friendship to my trip that I hadn’t anticipated. I highly recommend finding local models to work with whenever you travel. 

Here are effective ways to make that happen:

1. Utilize Instagram

Explore popular model hashtags for whatever city you happen to be in. I used hashtags like #BarcelonaModel, #BarcelonaPhotographer, and #BarcelonaFotografo to discover models in the area. If you have a substantial Instagram following, announce in your stories that you’re seeking models in a specific city. Encourage interested individuals to DM you with photos and a brief introduction.

2. Leverage Online Modeling Platforms

Platforms like Model Mayhem are valuable for finding models in different cities or countries. Create a profile showcasing your portfolio to establish credibility. Then, search for models and makeup artists in your desired location.

For a more professional approach, reach out to local modeling agencies via email. Explain the nature of your planned shoot and the type of model you are looking for. Agencies can assist in pairing you with the perfect model, considering your shoot requirements. Be aware that model fees vary based on factors like experience, shoot type, and demand.

During my Barcelona trip, I used Instagram and Model Mayhem. Browsing Barcelona-related hashtags led me to models whose profiles I scrutinized to ensure past modeling experience before reaching out via DM.

My approach involved introducing myself and expressing interest in collaborating for a specific shoot while sharing a link to my website. I also inquired about their rates or the possibility of a print exchange. Not everyone responded, so I definitely recommend reaching out to more people than you need. Here is an example message:

Hey! I’m ___(Name)___. I am going to be in ___(location)___ for the week and am looking for models to photograph for a ___(type of shoot)____ shoot. I love your look and think you’d be perfect for the shoot. Would you be interested in modeling? Here is a link to my website so you can explore my work. What is your rate? I’d also be happy to trade for prints if you prefer.

I also used Model Mayhem to specifically search for models in Barcelona. This website is pretty cool because it allows models to showcase their portfolio, so you can see a variety of past shoots they’ve done. It also makes it very clear what their rates are for different types of shoots and whether or not they are willing to trade for prints. The model I found on model Mayhem was amazing and even helped me find the perfect location for the shoot.

It is very important to remember that caution is crucial when photographing in another country with unfamiliar individuals. Consider bringing someone along for safety, or opt for public shoot locations to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable.

Capturing images with models from other countries can be a really interesting experience, often accompanied by language barriers. While in Barcelona, I had the opportunity to photograph a recently relocated Russian model. Our communication mainly relied on broken Spanish due to our lack of a shared language—she didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak Russian. Surprisingly, this language challenge brought an intriguing layer to the shoot, highlighting how photography transcends language barriers. Despite our language differences, we had such an amazing time photographing together and produced some really great images.

Photographing local models during my trip to Barcelona was one of the highlights of my trip. I definitely recommend giving it a shot if you have a fun trip planned.

A microscopic shock wave has been photographed passing through a single biological cell, thanks to a new photography technique. Nanosecond photography uses ultrafast electronic cameras to take images at the speed of a billionth of a second. However, image quality and exposure time are typically limited.

Now, a team led by researchers at the University of Tokyo has achieved superfine images taken over multiple timescales at high speed using a system they named spectrum circuit. Spectrum circuit bridges the gap between and conventional electronic cameras, enabling photography at ultrafast speeds with less blur and more accuracy. This technology has potential applications for science, medicine and industry.

Timing can be everything in photography and capturing images at high speed poses a particular challenge. But thanks to advances in , these days we can see the world like never before. Whether it’s the sweat on a racing cyclist’s brow, the focus in the eyes of a swooping falcon or, with this latest improvement in nanosecond photography, the movement of a shock wave passing through a microscopic single cell at high speed.

The paper is published in the journal Science Advances.

“For the first time in history, as far as we know, we have directly observed the interaction between a biological cell and a shock wave, and experimentally demonstrated that the velocity of the shock wave propagating inside the cell is faster than the outside of the cell,” explained Takao Saiki, a doctoral student from the Department of Precision Engineering at the University of Tokyo.

“Furthermore, our approach has enabled us to demonstrate high-speed photography across a wide time range, which includes picosecond (one-trillionth of a second), nanosecond (one-billionth of a second) and millisecond (one-thousandth of a second) timescales.”

Capturing clear images of cells without affecting their structure or causing damage is very challenging. To safely take the images, the researchers developed a precision , a circuit that uses light instead of electricity, which they named spectrum circuit. With spectrum circuit they created nondamaging , which they set to emit at different timings. By combining this technology with an existing single-shot optical imaging technique called sequentially timed all-optical mapping , or STAMP, they were able to take series of images with higher definition and less blur than previously available.

The team used the same technology to look at the effects of on glass. Laser ablation is useful for precisely removing from a surface and is used in both industry and medicine. The researchers focused an ultrashort laser pulse just 35 femtoseconds long (one femtosecond is equal to one-quadrillionth of a second) onto a glass plate. Using the spectrum circuit, they observed the impact of the laser, the resulting shock waves, and the effect it had on the glass over picoseconds, nanoseconds and milliseconds.

“We could see the interplay between different physical processes taking place over time, and how they took shape,” said Keiichi Nakagawa, an associate professor from the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Precision Engineering at the University of Tokyo. “Our technology provides opportunities to reveal useful but unknown high-speed phenomena by enabling us to observe and analyze such ultrafast processes.

“Next, we are planning to use our imaging technique to visualize how cells interact with acoustic waves, like those used in ultrasound and shock wave therapy. By doing this, we aim to understand the primary physical processes that activate subsequent therapeutic effects in the human body.” The team also wants to use spectrum circuit to improve laser processing techniques, by identifying the physical parameters that would enable faster, more precise, more consistent and cost-effective manufacturing.

“We have always been fascinated by the power of visualization to understand complex phenomena. The chance to uncover and show parts of the world that were hidden before really drew us to this field,” said Nakagawa. “We expect to make broad contributions in various fields, from biomedicine to manufacturing, materials, the environment and energy.”

“I come from a background in physical art, including painting and printmaking, so this project excites me because it marks a return to physical production for my digital art,” said Davis of Optimism. “Stained glass aligns with my fascination with color and light, and I envisioned a human-scale floor sculpture designed to capture and interact with light. Through the collaboration with Ateliers Loire, we were able to achieve a magical effect in which color comes out of the work, is cast on the floor or on the wall, and starts to influence its surroundings.”

Final Exercises is an incredibly large production, complete with balloons and dancing. There is so much joy and celebration happening that it can be easy to miss moments. 

As the graduates processed down the Lawn, I stood near a mother and daughter as they watched for their family member among the graduates. The three of them embraced for a moment, with lots of tears flowing, then brother and sister touched foreheads before he continued in his procession down the Lawn. 

In the middle of so much noise and loud celebration, it was beautiful to witness a family quietly taking in the gravity of what it meant to them for this student to earn his degree.

Native American fine artists and performers will gather at Litchfield Park show on January 13 & 14

Litchfield Park, Arizona, is a small, charming city just 30 minutes west of Phoenix.  It is home to the historic four-star Wigwam Resort and Golf Course.  It is also home to several award-winning annual festivals, including the Litchfield Park Gathering.  The Gathering, which is free and open to the public, is a celebration of indigenous arts and cultures.  This year’s festival will be held on January 13 and 14, 2024.  The festival is open daily from 10am until 5pm. 

Now in its 32nd year of production, longtime participants look forward to this festival each year to “gather” and reconnect with family members and friends that they don’t often see.  More than one hundred Native American artists are participating in the Litchfield Park Gathering, which is an outdoor street festival held in the center of town.  Several longtime participants including Larry Ashkie, Bob Lansing, Daniel Ramirez, and Virgil J. Nez have pieces in museum and gallery collections. Even more are consistently juried into the nation’s most prestigious shows, including the Heard Museum Guild Indian Market and the Santa Fe Indian Market

 The Litchfield Park Gathering will provide festival patrons with an incredible selection of Native American masterpieces, including beadwork, jewelry, fetishes, kachinas, paintings, pottery, sculptures, and clothing and textiles. Both traditional and contemporary styles of art will be included, helping attendees understand that indigenous creativity comes in many forms and should not be stereotyped. Live artist demonstrations will also serve as teaching tools. These demonstrations enable festival goers to appreciate and interact with the artists and artisans on a personal level. 

Dancing, storytelling, and musical performances will be held on the main stage, as well as in the Cultural Education Area, where audience members can ask questions of the performers.  World champion hoop dancers Tony Duncan and Moontee Sinquah will be among the performers, along with world renowned classical guitarist Gabriel Ayala. In the nearby Children’s Area, children can create complimentary make and take arts and crafts, such as arrowhead necklaces, cornhusk dolls and mini clay pots. Violet Duncan will also hold daily hoop dancing workshops for children. Of course, Native American fare will also be available for purchase in the festival’s food court.

This is an exciting opportunity for artists to sell their work to both collectors and consumers. Participating artists will showcase their unique talents and perspectives to the thousands of festival goers who descend upon Litchfield Park every January. 

All artists go through a jurying process before being accepted into the show.  This process includes verification of tribal affiliations.  All artwork and pieces sold at the festival are original creations handcrafted and exhibited by the artists.  Accepted artists at Litchfield Park Gathering also have an opportunity to enter a juried art competition.  This special onsite review process will be performed by an expert panel on Friday, January 12, the afternoon before the festival. Judging will take place at the Wigwam Resort, which is right across from the festival grounds.  Winners will be notified when they retrieve their pieces that evening. Winners will also be announced and showcased during the festival.  Winning pieces are frequently coveted by festival attendees who purchase them during the festivals each year.
