Madeleine Saussotte, owner of Ocean Books, Half Moon Bay, California: Ken Paul Lozada is right up there among the brightest stars— he takes care of half the people in Half Moon by checking up on them on a regular basis. This book will help shine a small light on a man that’s much loved and valued in this community. He is such a giving person… for his compassion for others, for the time he takes to talk to others, the effort he uses to learn about their lives, especially when they are confronting difficulties. He does this with folks from any and all “stations” in life… he is not a fair-weather friend; he’s a constant.

Connie Boggs, Pinetop, AZ: On a cool misty evening in Half Moon Bay Ken Paul Lozada sat drinking hot tea in an art gallery where just a few words between us would change my heart and soul forever in ways I can’t describe.it just happened. Whenever I return, as often as I can, I sit quietly and at a distance watch him work his magic sculpting trees of all shapes and sizes wondering who and what drives him. A few years ago, I passed him on the street and I sensed this joy about him that I can’t explain. He is mystical just by his presence. As soon as I can afford a small piece of his work I will bring it back to AZ with me to keep him close to my heart. With the release of the Peaceful Warrior: The Life of Ken Paul Lozada I will finally get my answer.

Richard Chun, Jr., San Jose, Ca: “I found the account of Ken’s life to be fascinating, somewhat mirroring my own. His early life experiences as an orphan reflects what all of us have experienced in some measure: fear, loneliness, and uncertainty. How he has managed to cope with negative experiences testifies to others that despite hardships and setbacks, life is indeed worth living. His perspectives shown in his sculptures reveal our true inner selves, enabling us to fully realize who we truly are.”

Of those people who were once drawn to Ken Paul Lozada’s sculpture garden in Half Moon Bay, California, vying to get a closer look at pieces of wood to which he has given a new life with shiny, undulating lines, cavernous abysses, and chiseled squares, many found their initial interest giving way to a sense of wanting to know more about this man who seems to be able to intuit things only known to them.

A near-death experience after a car accident left Ken, who spent many years in an orphanage, with a new understanding about the gift of life which he has since sought to share with others. He has surrendered to complete honesty and openness, while becoming a conveyor of truth, who transforms chaos into harmony. His gravity-defying fragments of wood become symbols of restoration as these once-majestic trees that have been discarded get a new lease
on life.

A biographical glimpse at this creator includes family photos spanning five generations and reveals that his arboreal creations are messengers about the sacred nature all humans possesses within. Perhaps this dialogue with one of his sculptures, called “Hollowed Feeling,” shows that all humans are capable of giving rise to their true spirit, if a simple, reworked fragment of wood can once again look complete:

“Why do you question your tree nature when all around you move humans who resemble your nature. They too, have a space within their nature that cries out for recognition and care… This hollowed-out piece of wood has come to strike a chord of recognition in the forgotten and lonely human that at one time felt immersed in the pangs of despair. What do you have to say to these who have had or have that emptied-out and hollowed feeling? Possibly, might it not be, ‘Plunge your hand into the space that occupies the soul of my being and know you too have a space in yourself … the gift of life is yours to give and share … welcome to the joy and thrill of being a hollow soul waiting to be filled with life.'”

The book features the photography of Ken’s sculptures by Pete Zivkov, Joanne Ehrich, and others.

Lois Lozada White, teacher: “…Sitting among tall overgrown field grasses strewn with bees and petals, the pieces stand upon their own accord. Sometimes their presence talks to the wayward viewer, other times, in the silence of a late afternoon or a misty morning, they seem to converse with one another, about the complexity of life, the simplicity of nature and the ambiguous shapes that can be found in both.”
